Every walkable world eventually needs a minimap, and every minimap is a small act of cartographic lying. You are compressing a three-dimensional place onto a rectangle the size of a playing card, and every choice about what survives that compression teaches the player what matters.
The Holovate minimap draws three kinds of truth. Parcels you have not found render as dim neutral blocks — present, so the world feels finite and mappable, but muted, so undiscovered space still invites walking. Discovered parcels take their district color. Owned parcels go green, matching their rendering in the 3D scene, so ownership reads identically at every zoom level of the interface.
The player marker is the only moving element, projected from world coordinates with a simple linear mapping. No rotation, no fancy viewport cone — a static north-up map is easier to build a mental model against, and mental models are the entire point of a minimap.
What we left out matters as much: no terrain contours, no crystal or portal markers, no clutter. A minimap is not a screenshot of the world; it is a diagram of your relationship to it.
Watch it update live as you walk in the frontier world.
