The holographic aesthetic is really a materials question: how do you make interface elements look like they are made of light instead of plastic? The answer is a short list of techniques that WebGL handles natively.
Emissive materials do the heavy lifting. A surface with its own emissive color reads as self-luminous — it glows against dark surroundings without any actual light transport. In the Holovate world, parcel towers, portal rings, and resource crystals all carry emissive components tuned to different intensities, which is what makes the frontier feel powered rather than painted.
Transparency and additive layering supply the second signature. Real holograms are see-through and brightest where layers overlap; translucent parcel tiles and a semi-transparent world grid echo both properties cheaply.
The third trick is selective saturation. Holographic UI reads best when the glowing elements are rare against a desaturated ground — our terrain is nearly black-green precisely so mint, gold, coral, and violet accents can carry the light. Make everything glow and nothing does.
Interface fiction works when it is disciplined. Pick a physics for your light, apply it everywhere, and the eye accepts the world as coherent — which is most of what “holographic” ever meant.
